WORK is under way on an office development in a Teesdale business park which could create dozens of jobs in the area.

The site, at Harmire Enterprise Park, in Barnard Castle, is being built on more than two acres of land and is being hailed as a modern energy efficient workplace.

The development, which could create 60 jobs, includes 20,000sq ft of office space for a business or a number of companies and could prove to be a major boost for the local economy in Teesdale.

The building has water recycling sources and solar panels so that it can be energy self-sufficient, which planners are keen to introduce with all new developments in Harmire Enterprise Park.

The project has received money from the European Regional Development Fund and is expected to be complete by this summer.

Phil Hughes, One NorthEast board member and chairman of Teesdale District Council, said: "This development brings much-needed high quality accommodation to Teesdale and its sustainability will be an excellent example for future developments throughout the region."

The development has received support from council officers, who are keen to encourage business growth.

Tony Seaman, director of development services at Teesdale District Council: "The timing is fantastic, providing the many new businesses setting up in Teesdale with high quality business accommodation and links to GlaxoSmithKline's Teesdale Enterprise Fund and the district council's new business grants supported by the North Pennines Leader Fund."
