FORTY young actors and musicians from a Darlington school are to get a taste of Broadway.

The GCSE music and drama students from Branksome Comprehensive School are heading for New York because they have tickets for the Broadway version of the musical Cabaret.

The show will form part of their examination syllabus, which requires them to study a production.

After seeing the show they will be able to take part in two workshops with members of the Cabaret cast.

Some of the 14 to 16-year-olds have never been abroad before.

The five-day trip will include a sightseeing tour featuring the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre and a visit to Ground Zero, the site of the Twin Towers tragedy.

Ceri Kear, head of music at Branksome School, said: "Last week it was -15C over there. This week it has been between -1C and 3C, so we will be telling them once again to pack warm clothing."
