THEATRE fans in Hartlepool have the opportunity to spend An Evening With Gary Lineker for one night only this month.

Football's Mr Nice Guy will not be there, but he will still be the focal point of the play.

Written by Arthur Smith and Chris England, it was first performed in 1991 and since then it has been a hit with theatre-goers around the country.

"This is a terrific, sparkling comedy which has built up a huge reputation," said Claire Munroe, marketing officer for Hartlepool Borough Council, which is bringing the show to the town hall theatre.

"It is an absolute must for football fans, and those who have to live with them."

The play is set in Majorca on July 4, 1990 and tells the story of Bill and Monica, who have come to the island on holiday in an attempt to save their failing marriage.

Unfortunately for Monica, it is also the England versus Germany semi-final in the Italia 1990 World Cup.

Through 90 minutes, extra time and the infamous penalty shoot-out, the field of battle switches between the hotel and the Italian football pitch with surreal and hilarious consequences.

The story reveals Monica's fantasy affair with Gary Lineker, her real affair with author Dan and the totally bizarre behaviour of Birgetta, a German tourist.

The production at Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 19 and tickets cost £8 or £6 with concessions.
