A POPULAR tourist attraction has trebled in size.

An area of woodland was opened at Castle Eden Walkway, Thorpe Thewles, near Stockton yesterday.

The 250 acres of land bought from the Wynyard Estate marks the first phase of a plan to transform the facility into Wynyard Woodland Park.

The walkway is owned by Stockton Borough Council, which is confident of securing grants that will result in further improvements to the Thorpe Thewles Station House Visitor Centre and more land being bought.

The land was purchased from the Wynyard Estate with £135,000 made available by the Countryside Agency through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.

The Wynyard Woodland Park Project is a joint initiative established by the council and the Tees Forest with the aim of creating a gateway for the forest and developing a flagship visitor attraction
