A TRIP to the National Railway Museum in York proved a big attraction for fathers in a new scheme.
When Heather Harkin, of the Sure Start Dads and Kids Group, announced that she was arranging a trip to the museum, there was a clamour for places.
Ms Harkin's project, Fathers Plus, concentrates on the Ferryhill and Chilton Sure Start areas.
It is aimed at encouraging fathers to recognise the importance of their playing an active role in bringing up a young family.
Ms Harkin arranges activities to attract new fathers, which they may not have thought about participating in individually.
She said: "We had a dozen dads and 20 children of all ages and it was hard to see who was the most excited about seeing the trains. Without doubt, it was a great day out and a tremendous success."
Ms Harkin runs two fathers' groups: on Tuesdays from 1pm to 3pm at Ferryhill Station Family Centre and on alternate Saturdays, from 11am to 1pm, at the Chilton Family Centre.
Anyone who would like more information on the group can ring Ms Harkin on (01740) 657739 or (07976) 077900.
