MECHANIC Neil Todd entered a competition hoping to win a T-shirt - but now he is in the running for a national title.
The 31-year-old, from King Street, Ripon, has beaten hundreds of mechanics to reach the national finals of the Champion Spark Plug Technician of the Year awards
Mr Todd, who works for Kirkby Motors, in Kirkby Malzeard, reached the finals after getting through two theory tests.
At the finals, to be held in Cheshire next month, he will face a day of theory and practical exams.
Inspired by his love of cars, Mr Todd began his career in the motor industry after leaving school. His girlfriend Abigail will be there to cheer for him on the big day.
"I think the biggest obstacle in the final will be overcoming my nerves," said Mr Todd, a cricket enthusiast who plays for Galphay and Winksley Cricket Club.
"But I will do some last minute swotting up to ensure I am fully match fit - although I don't want to overtrain and get burn-out. I think it will be a great challenge, a great experience and, if I win, a fantastic achievement - I will certainly be bowled over."
The competition is run by Champion Spark Plugs and industry magazine Professional Motor Mechanic.
