A SERIES of bridge improvements has begun on the A194(M), the road which leads from the A1(M) at Washington towards the Tyne Tunnel.
Work is expected to continue until early May as maintenance is carried out to six bridges between the A1(M) intersection and the A195 junction, at Follingsby.
It includes repairs to concrete parapets, replacement of safety fences, resurfacing and verge improvements.
Andrew Vigrass, of project sponsor the Highways Agency, said: "Wherever possible, we will work either in off-peak times or overnight, to reduce the impact of delays on road users.
"There will be times, however, when sections of hard shoulder and inside lanes will be closed so work can be carried out safely."
Bridges affected include those at Blackfell, Washington, Havannah South and North, Peareth Hall, plus Follingsby North and South.
Night-time closures will be restricted to 9pm to 6.30am, although there are likely to be 24-hour hard shoulder closures, and off-peak lane closures in some cases.
