POLICE are set to move into a shopping complex that will breath life into east Durham.

Officers will be based in the management team's building at the £40m Dalton Park factory outlet centre, near Murton.

Traffic crews - the complex is near the A19 - and local beat officers will share the premises, which will be let at a nominal rent by developers London and Amsterdam.

The force's existing premises in Woods Terrace, Murton, are up for sale and the move to Dalton Park is expected to take place at the beginning of next month.

The force's estates manager, Doug Swailes, said: "This demonstrates how we can be flexible and work alongside other organisations to mutual benefit.''

The complex, on the site of the former Dalton Flatts colliery spoil tip, will boast 70 factory outlet shops and provide about 800 jobs.

* Police are also on the move in the Blackhill area of Consett.

The force is spending up to £40,000 on the conversion of a factory unit in Derwent Street, near the main shopping area.

Officers are moving from premises in Churchill Close, in nearby Shotley Bridge.
