CHILDREN who drew up a fire escape plan as part of a community project were rewarded by fire officials yesterday.

Brother and sister Mark, 11, and Sarah Warner, 15, from Eston, came up with their plan as part of a project for Eston Community Junior Rangers.

Rangers' organiser Colin Shaw then showed the plan to firefighters at Grangetown fire station who carry out community education in schools.

They were so impressed that they arranged for a model of the plan to be made and it will now be used during their visits to schools.

Leading firefighter Derek Hardesty, from Red Watch Grangetown, said: "It will be a great visual aid when we talk to children about fire safety in the home and shows perfectly the need to have a escape plan should a fire occur in the home."
