Darlington caretaker boss Mick Tait is keeping his fingers crossed defender Matt Clarke will receive the all-clear ahead of Sunday's clash with Wrexham.
The former Halifax man, who has missed the last four games after accidentally slicing his thumb open at home, will see a specialist tomorrow to find out whether he can play.
With Barry Conlon suspended, Tait is in need of a big target man and after his two-goal blast as a second half emergency striker against Kidderminster last month, Clarke could yet play in his less favoured position.
Tait had hoped to include Clarke in last week's squad at Lincoln but was advised against it by a specialist.
And while Tait would no doubt welcome Clarke's return he believes the player's health remains the biggest priority.
"Having the use of his thumb for the rest of his life is a lot more important than playing a couple of games for us," said Tait.
"The specialist was adamant he couldn't play at Lincoln.
"What we have to think about first is Matt's health.
"We're hoping he will be available but we can't afford to take any chances."
