DARLINGTON sixth form student Faye Cowburn had an unusual idea to raise cash for her gap year in South Africa.
Faye, 18, from Bishop Middleham, organised a pie eating competition at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, where she is studying A-level French, art and theatre studies. Faye and a handful of others took up the challenge to see who could eat ten mince and onion pies in the fastest time, with sponsors betting on their favourites.
Nick Sinclair won, but ten proved too many. He managed eight. Faye needs £2,600 to fund her trip in July.
She will spend five months teaching English, drama and art in Knysna, five hours from Cape Town. After her gap year she intends to study theatre arts at university.
