COUNTY Durham's special constables will be on the streets in force this weekend to back a recruitment drive.

Most of the 100 unpaid officers who support the work of Durham Police will be on patrol from today until Sunday as part of National Special Constabulary Weekend.

North-West Durham MP and Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong will be on duty with Weardale special Michelle Robson on Saturday.

Ms Armstrong wil team up Ms Robson and her full-time colleague Sergeant John Curtis following a 10am surgery at the Durham Dales Centre, in Stanhope.

Officers in Durham City and Chester-le-Street are targeting young people behaving badly, providing observers for the North-East police helicopter and carrying out roadside speed checks.

Easington special constables will be on patrol in Peterlee town centre while those in Derwentside will be on the beat in Consett and Stanley.

Under-age drinking will be the focus of activity in Darlington with local young volunteers making test purchase at off-licences.

In south Durham, anyone interested in joining the specials is invited to an open evening on Tuesday, March 4, at Spennymoor police station, from 7pm to 9pm.
