A PET parrot was rescued by firemen wearing breathing apparatus after a fridge caused a house fire in South Bank, Middlesbrough.

No one was injured in the blaze, but firefighters from Skelton and Guisborough heard the bird's cries as they searched the smoke-logged property, in Stanghow Road.

The parrot was saved but the fridge was destroyed by the intense heat from the fire, which started at about 6.45am yesterday.

The kitchen was also damaged by the flames and the rest of the house suffered smoke damage.
