A WOMAN who smashed a bottle over the head of her former friend during a drunken fight was jailed for 18 months yesterday.

Amanda Rough, 21, had been pals with Julie Green before a "stupid falling out" turned them into enemies, Newcastle Crown Court was told yesterday.

Ms Green, who is in her 20s, also received a slash to her chest after she was attacked by Rough, a mother-of-one, on October 4.

The court heard how an argument had started inside Dougie's Tavern, in Hebburn, South Tyneside, but later spilled on to the streets.

Ms Green was initially punched and knocked to the ground by a man before Rough stepped in.

Tony Hawks, prosecuting, said: "The defendant smashed either a bottle or glass over the complainant's head and then either deliberately or in the course of a struggle, the broken bottle or glass came into contact with the complainant's chest."

Ms Green received hospital treatment and could be left scarred.

Rough, of Jervis Street, Hebburn, who has a string of previous convictions for drunkenness and violence, pleaded guilty to wounding.

Mark Styles, defending, said Rough had started drinking "more and more" since suffering depression.
