LOCAL authorities in the North-East and North Yorkshire will share in an estimated £104m a year during the Government's Supporting People programme.
The project, which begins on April 1, is a new way of planning and improving housing- related support services for vulnerable people, such as the homeless and women fleeing domestic violence.
The programmes aim to prevent crises such as hospitalisation, institutional care or homelessness, by providing early support when it is most effective.
Housing Minister Jeff Rooker said: "We have asked local authorities to start immediately on a review of each of these services, to address their quality, cost effectiveness and local relevance.
"This process of review will form the basis for funding in future years. The services will help ensure vulnerable people become and remain independent in the community.
"This will include helping young homeless people prepare for greater independence through training in basic life skills and helping older people remain in their own homes.
Estimated annual grants for local authorities: North Yorkshire £14,632,922, City of York £7,590,975, Durham County £10,773,020, Northumberland £3,819,626, Hartlepool £8,962,478, Middlesbrough £5,200,564, Redcar and Cleveland £2,134,180, Stock-ton £2,349,462, Darlington £3,339,442. Tyne and Wear authorities will share £45,206,616.
