A GREEN space which was to become a football academy could soon be turned into a golf course.
Outline planning permission is being sought for a par three, nine-hole course and driving range in Waverdale, Walkergate, in the East End of Newcastle.
The site used to be a steep-sided dene. Used for landfill during the 1950s and 1960s, it was then landscaped.
Newcastle United FC had made a proposal to develop its academy on the site. However, the club's decision to develop Darsley Park and a site at Little Benton has left the Waverdale area available.
Cabinet member for culture, tourism and sport, Councillor Ged Bell said: "There is a substantial demand for this type of facility in the East End.
"The Waverdale site has been analysed to establish whether it is big enough to carry a golf course and satisfy the existing demands - horse grazing, the trotting track and the school playing fields.
"The proposal is acceptable from a planning point of view and has the support of the Going for Growth team."
