A TEENAGER was rescued by firefighters after he became trapped on an island in the middle of a frozen lake.
The 13-year-old boy had walked over the icy lake in Darlington and on to the island yesterday afternoon.
He became trapped after his friends broke the ice with bricks leaving him stranded on the lake near St Andrew's church in Salters Lane South.
The teenager jumped into the water to swim back to dry land but was hampered by the ice and had to return to the island. Firefighters from Darlington were called to the scene at 2.30pm yesterday.
A spokesman said: "We rescued the boy using an extension lead which was thrown across the ice. He was made secure then he crawled across a ladder to safety. He refused to go to hospital. He was wet and a bit shaken."
