Grangetown YCC v Lingdale Tavern

Lingdale took an early lead when in the second minute Shane Breckon broke through, his shot was stopped by Moore in the Grangetown goal but the resulting loose ball was scrambled in by Dane Breckon. Grangetown almost equalised in the 15th minute when a free kick hit the post and a volley from Wake, on the rebound was superbly tipped over the bar by Lingdale's stand-in keeper, Chisman. In the 20th minute Darcy won the ball in midfield and played Shane Breckon through for him to slot the ball homne. Grangetown battled hard but wuth Calvert and Thompson working well in midfield and two more good saves from Chisman, Lingdale held on to the 2-0 advantage to the break. For 15 minutes of the second half both teams battled well then on the hal hour 16-year-old Dane Breckon scored the goal of the match when he took on two men in midfield to break and hold off the challenge from a defender to round the keeper for Lingdale's third. The fourth came when Thompson carried the ball unchallenged for 40 yards to hit a good shot into the top corner. After making two substitutions Grangetown scored through Batty when Lingdale failed to clear their line then with just five minutes remaining Wake pullede another goal back with a good 20 yard shot. A strong finish by Grangetown almost led to a third but Hood cleared off the line. Final score 4-2.

Highland Laddie v Anchor Inn

Laddie began the stronger with Dowson and Combellack working hard in midfield, but as the game wore on Scott took control of the Anchor midfield and they began to create a few chances, neither keeper had much to do, however, with scoring chances at a premium in the first half. In the second half Anchor were much more in control with Hetherington storming forward and Scott spreading the play. Eventually, on 70 minutes Richie broke through the Laddie defence only to be brought down in the area. Hanratty duly converted the resulting penalty. Laddie rallied a little with Combellack, Lowther and Rye all going close but Anchor weathered the storm. Nesbitt had a hotly disputed penalty turned down for the Laddie and then Lacy scuffed a shot for the Anchor in the closing seconds leaving the score at 1-0.

Lingdale Utd v Lealholm

Both teams must be congratulated for trying to play good football on this uneven and heavy pitch. Lingdale found themselves ahead in the first minbute, Iseton scoriung from close range. Just a minute later however Carruthers equalised for Lealholm, also from close-range. A 30th minute goal from Brown gave Lealholm the lead and with Lealholm at this stage the much stronger team it took three excellent saves from Lingdale keeper Gibson to keep the score down. Lealholm kept up the pressure early in the second half and went furthet ahead when Harland tapped the ball into an empty net after a mix up in the Lingdale defence. On the half hour Lingdale came back into the game, Hololob scoring with a low drive. A similar goal from Fordor levelled the score. Lealholm were now under pressure A header from Evans hit the post but he made sure of his second chance when he drove the rebound into the roof of the net to complete Lingdale's 4-3 win.

Loftus Ath v Gt Ayton

After the sharp overnight frost this game got under way on a heavy pitch, making it difficult for passing football. Loftus made the better start, putting the Gt Ayton defence under constant pressure and a disputed penalty led to the first goal when Dixon converted. Against the run of play Ayton equalised when Ripley hit a 20-yard free-kick to beat Cross in the Loftus goal. Loftus immediately regained the lead when poor Ayton defending allowed Wilson through to score. The Ayton midfield were finding it difficult to win the ball to supply the forwards but they levelled again when a free kick by Long was placed across the Loftus goal, deflected by a defender, leaving Cross helpless as the ball crept over the line. Ayton made changes at hal time in the hope of getting the ball wide and attack the Loftus defence with the sun in the keepers eyes. This plan proved fruitless, with Ashberry commanding the Loftus defence, winning him the man of the match. With continued poor Ayton defending, Loftus took control, Smithies leading the attack well. A further four goals gave the home side a comfortable win.

Redcar Mackinlay Park v Boosbeck U

In a hard fought first half Boosbeck just had the edge although the first scoring chance fell to Redcar, Myers saving bravely at the feet of Smith. Boosbeck then had two first half chances cleared off the line. The second half was just a minute old when Boosbeck opened the scoring, Clapton forcing his way down the left, beating two men and producing a perfect cross for Winter to head into the net. Some good work by Wilson sent an inch perfect pass to Winter who fed Johnson for him to head in Boosbeck's second. Redcar Mackinlay pulled a goal back when a free kick on the edge of Boosbeck's penalty area found Smith, who headed over the advancing keeper. Crawford and Parry dominated the mid field for Boosbeck in this very competitive game and another ball down the left saw Winter beat his man, he chipped the ball over the keeper but saw his shot hit the post. Shortly after Wilson was provider to give Winter his second and Boosbeck's third. Boosbeck remained sound at the back allowing no chances for the Redcar forwards, Russell in particular playing well. Boosbeck clinched the match with a fourth goal when a long ball from Buck found Johnson who slotted past the advancing keeper and complete what had been a good all round team performance from Boosbeck.

Eileen Hodgson Bowl

Whitby Fisherman's v Brotton WMC

Despite atrocious pitch conditions Fishermen started brightly and were playing some attractive football, but as in previous matches, were unable to create a goal scoring opportunity. Once Brotton had settled on the playing surface they took control and a mistake in the Whitby defence led to Scott slotting coolly past Walker in the Whitby goal. Fishermen attempted to get back into the game but a wasted free-kick led to a Brotton break and, after a good interchange of passes, Scott walked the ball into the net for his second. Brotton controlled the rest of the half and it was no surprise when Scott completed his hat-trick. Thankfully Fishermen's heads did not go down and they took the game to Brotton in the second half, having plenty of possession but still struggling to create any clear scoring chances. Brotton scored a controversial fourth when a tackle that was judged to be a back-pass found its way into the keepers arms and the referee gave a free kick. Whilst the Fishermen were arguing about the decision, Brotton took a quick free-kick to score. To their credit the young Whitby team did not give up and after scramblimg in the Brotton box, Roberts scored a deserved goal. After continuing to push forward they were then awarded a penalty which Maxwell successfully converted to make the final score 4-2.
