CONDITIONS were icy at Charltons before the Guisborough Motor Club East Yorkshire Centre Trial got started on Sunday, but it soon melted and left the course in a slippery, muddy condition.

Run over four laps of ten sections, the appropriately-named Jonathan Frost took his Gas Gas round for the loss of 28 marks, eight of which went at the steep, muddy climb over tree routes at the fourth section.

High up Weardale at Rookhope, the South Shields Club's North East Centre Harland Cup Trial had a massive entry of 158 competitors, who tackled three big laps of 13 sections.

Paul Nicholson (Gas Gas) took the win on the hard course for the loss of just 12 marks, seven clear of John Crinson (Beta), who finished just one ahead of Kirk Vitty (Beta).

On the easy course, two marks covered the first four finishers, with John "Killer" Kendrew (Sherco) taking the win by one mark from Andy Minns (Beta) and Colin Davison (Beta), Minns taking second place on a tie-breaker.

There was a separate small course for the youngsters on TY80s, which was won by Robbie Nelson from John Battensby, while on the modern bikes, young star Joe McMeekin on a Cripic was a clear winner from Andrew Battensby.

Last Saturday the Yorkshire Centre of the ACU held their annual dinner and prize presentation at the Spa Hotel, Ripon. It was not a particularly well-attended event, with just 77 people at an occasion which normally attracts up to 200.

Prominent among the awards were the two Yorkshire Centre teams - the adult team of Martin Crosswaite, Sam Ludgate, Dan Thorpe, Henry Moorhouse and Dan Clarke, who took the adult award in the inter centre team trial, and the youth team of James Davill, Dane Sherwin, Lee Sampson, Jonathan Richardson and Jack Challoner, who also came first
