The Books and Banter group meets for discussions on books, local history, talks and quizzes at Stockton Central Library.

The group, which also has regular guest speakers, meets on Wednesdays from 10.30am to noon. There is no charge for anyone interested in popping in, and tea and coffee is on offer. A programme of suggested topics is available from the Central Library.

COFFEE AND CHAT: Mothers and toddlers are being invited for a free coffee, cake and chat on Wednesday, between 2pm to 3pm in the restaurant at the Asda store in Thornaby. The event was organised by Surestart in the Mandale Village and Stainsby areas of town. Mothers will also be able to receive home safety and health information advice. HOSPICE LOTTERY: Hartlepool and District Hospice is celebrating its eighth birthday this week. Since the first draw on February 24, 1995, the lottery has generated more than £2.25m towards patient care. It has made 419 members £2,000 richer and given away 58,332 smaller prizes, making a total of £1.25m paid out in prize money. DOCTOR WANTED: A public meeting has been arranged to discuss the need for a doctor in Helmlington on Teesside. ROAD CLOSED: Traffic diversions will be in place on Fishpond Road and Yearby Bank, Redcar, until road improvement work is complete by Wednesday, March 5.
