THE momentum picked up in recent weeks by Darlington Mowden Park gathered force with a 60-0 win at Scunthorpe.

Mowden's biggest victory in National Three North leaves them only one point behind fifth-placed Tynedale, and with a home match against Broadstreet coming up on Saturday they should complete a run of six successive wins.

Again they proved they don't need Newcastle back row men Soa Otuvaka and Craig Newby as the former was selected at blind side but twisted an ankle in the warm-up.

But the third loan signing, Falcons' academy centre Nick Wainwright, did strengthen their midfield weakness with a classy display.

He cut inside for the seventh of the nine tries, to which Mark Bedworth added a penalty and six conversions.

Bottom club Scunthorpe put up weaker resistance than in their 42-20 defeat at Mowden last month, although they did apply ten minutes of pressure after trailing 31-0 at half-time.

Mowden dozed off during that period and lost prop Dave Sinclair to the sin-bin for going over the ball, otherwise they came much closer than usual to sustaining their effort for 80 minutes.

Tony Irwin took Otuvaka's place and played a prominent part, while Andy Dean also did well when he went on for centre Matt Howland after 54 minutes.

Howland scored the first try after 11 minutes following good work by skipper Aaron Redaelli, then the home backs lost the ball and Mowden hacked on for winger Steve Jones to touch down.

Howland should have scored again after a good run by Bedworth, but he dropped the ball in trying to ground it.

Forward domination brought the next two tries for full back Iain Dixon and flanker Vaha Faleovalu, then Bedworth broke again and this time Howland finished it off.

It was 13 minutes into the second half before Bedworth kick-started Mowden again by landing a penalty, and from the restart Irwin fed lock Kelekolia Paino, who galloped away to score from well inside his own half.

Then came Wainwright's try before Paino made another surge and flicked a pass behind his back for Dixon to grab his second.

Finally Dean drew two men and sent Vaha down the middle to complete the rout.

Blaydon are now only three points ahead of the bottom four after losing 16-14 at Broadstreet, although with home games to come against Bedford Athletic, Hull Ionians and Tynedale they should be OK.

There was no change in North Two East as Hull stayed third with a 39-15 home win against Horden and Westoe remained fourth after beating Stockton 38-3.

The visitors scored first through a fifth minute penalty by Simon Moore.

But hopes of building on the previous week's seven-try romp against Scarborough quickly vanished.

Centre Dave Fairlamb and winger Mark Olugbode scored first half tries for Westoe, with full back Craig Stephenson adding three penalties.

Olugbode raced over from 45 yards for his second and there were further tries from lock Matthew Muchall and replacement winger Paul Alexander, the former Blaydon player.

Northallerton suffered a crushing blow with a 42-0 defeat at Ilkley in a game they needed to win to stay out of relegation trouble in Yorkshire Two.

They have now slipped below their hosts into next to bottom spot.
