A GROUP of purring misfits are being passed over as new owners search for the perfect moggie.

Claude, a Persian-cross chinchilla, who is deaf, and an overweight cat called Tammy are two of the residents at the Blue Cross Centre, Thirsk, who are in desperate need of a loving home.

Fellow resident Oscar, who has half a jaw, was brought to the centre nearly a year ago and Spot is suffering depression after her last litter of kittens all died.

Animal welfare assistant at the centre, Nicki Hall, said: "It's human nature for people to pass up a quirky-looking animal or one with a disability for a so-called perfect cat, but we just want to remind people that they can have great personalities and can make great pets too.

"It's so sad to see people pass by their cages because they are a bit different. I think the fact that they are a bit quirky makes them more interesting."
