A couple had to be rescued from a fire in York at the weekend.

A man and a woman were rescued by firefighters after their home in Huntington Road became engulfed in flames. The couple were taken to York District Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. The cause of the fire is still unknown. 100TH birthday: Farmer's widow Mrs Eliza Dale has celebrated her 100th birthday at an old people's home at Larpool Lane, Whitby. She and her late husband, John, farmed at Egton for many years after she had been brought up on her family's farm at nearby Glaisdale.

EVEREST TALK: Robin Rutherford will give an illustrated talk, called Everest the Fast Way, at the Swaledale Rescue headquarters, Hipswell Road West, Catterick Garrison, on Friday, at 7.30pm. The cost is £3 and proceeds will go to the rescue team funds.

SPRING FAIR: A fair in aid of Kirkby Fleetham Church will be held on Wednesday in Northallerton Town Hall, between 9am and 2pm. Stalls selling bric-a-brac, jumble, cakes, books, toys and games.

GARDEN CLUB: Masham Garden Club will meet to host a talk about lawns and caring for gardens at the town hall, tonight, at 7.30pm.

SLIDE SHOW: Northallerton Camera Club will hold a slide show on Wednesday, at Brompton Methodist Church, at 7.30pm. The show will feature pictures about landscape, nature and sport.

HISTORY CLUB: Members of the Colburn Local History Group will meet on Wednesday, at 7.30pm, in the Oak Tree pub.
