YOUNGSTERS are to line up against a team of police officers in a football match aimed at improving relationships between youths and the law.
The footballers, aged 13 to 21, will play against the officers on Wednesday. The teams will spend the morning playing in a five-a-side tournament, plus rock climbing, drama and art.
The afternoon will be dedicated to workshops aimed at improving relationships between police and youngsters.
The event, organised by Newcastle Youth Council and Northumbria Police Authority, follows a call from young people in Newcastle for closer links with police.
Councillor Barry Phillipson, city council cabinet member for community planning and chairman of the Community Safety Partnership, said: "Young people should not always be viewed as perpetrators of crime. They are also victims of crime and have views and concerns which are very relevant to ensure that everyone works together to make our communities safer places to live."
Sergeant Alan Taylor, of Newcastle Central Command, said: "We are hoping this event will further improve our relationship with young people in Newcastle and give us an opportunity to hear their views."
Anyone wanting to take part in the event is asked to contact Jill Bauld on 0191-265 2405.
