DARLINGTON Salvation Army has raised a quarter of the £75,000 needed to rebuild its centre.

Members have raise the money in a year through concerts, bric-a-brac sales and donations.

The cash target is £1m, but the Army's senior staff agreed that if members raised an initial £75,000, they would top up the rest.

Lieutenant Anne Crane, of the Salvation Army, said: "We have raised about a quarter of the money, which is not bad for such a small number of people. We are still raising the money, but we will have to talk to the Salvation Army before any final decisions are made."

Concerns were raised about the state of the building last year, after damp was found to be causing the building to deteriorate.
