A 23-year-old twin has died after the car he was driving crashed into a wall.

Lee Winspear, of Skelton, near Saltburn, was driving a Skoda Favorit on Stanghow Road, between Skelton and Lingdale when the car veered off the road and hit a sandstone wall at 7.12pm on Monday.

Five people were in the green K-registration car at the time of the accident, including Lee Winspear's twin, Carl. All were taken to Middlesbrough General Hospital.

One passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Loftus, was detained with leg injuries but Carl together with a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, both from Loftus, were all released from hospital on Monday night.

The Winspear family became well known in the community when Lee's twin Carl and their mother Marion Farnworth, were featured in a BBC drama-documentary called Little Angels in August last year.

Programme producer Peter Lee-Wright explained the documentary was about young people fighting heroin addiction. He explained Lee Winspear did not appear in the documentary as he was in jail at the time of filming.

He said: "We met the family through Carl's friend Shaun Mann. Carl and his mum appeared several times, his mother was particularly moving when she tried to explain how hard it can be trying to cope when your sons get into trouble. The last time I was in touch with the family was before Christmas and everything seemed to be going well. This is a tragedy, a waste of a young life."

The family agreed to release a picture of Lee Winspear but were too devastated to talk about the tragedy.

Police say a number of people are known to have stopped at the scene of the accident and are appealing for witnesses. The Skoda turned on to its roof before rolling back on to its wheels.
