MUSEUMS are sending some of their most prized exhibits on the road to reach out to the whole community through some more unusual, but well-used venues.

An innovative scheme has been launched in the Hambleton and Richmondshire area to give people throughout the rural community more access to the district's many wonderful, cultural treasures.

The flying showcase will put museum objects on display in local community venues, from doctors' surgeries to banks.

The scheme was launched at Bedale Leisure Centre when the exhibition landed for a six-week stay before it moves on to the Co-op in Richmond.

Six museums across Hambleton and Richmondshire have joined the scheme and the showcase itself was especially commissioned for the project.

The World of James Herriot centre at Thirsk, Bedale Museum, Thirsk Museum, Kiplin Hall, The Green Howards Museum and Richmondshire Museum have all signed up to the scheme.

Cash for the project, which is being led jointly by Hambleton and Richmondshire district councils, came from a £1,000 grant from the Yorkshire Museum Council.
