THE Co-op has announced plans to create a £1.1bn buying and marketing group at the heart of its travel business, designed to push it into the travel retail top flight.

Five Co-operative travel businesses have agreed to form the Co-operative Travel Trading Group (CTTG), which will take charge of the two key business functions on behalf of more than 600 travel outlets, the UK's largest homeworking travel distribution network and seven national call centres.

Between them the Co-ops sell three million holidays a year.

The move will put CTTG alongside Lunn Poly, Going Places, Thomas Cook and First Choice Retail in terms of holiday sales.

It will account for more than 90 per cent of the Co-op's travel business and will be the largest single independent holiday and travel distribution network in the UK.
