A PLAN to protect and enhance wildlife across Hambleton will be launched later this week.

The district's biodiversity action plan will also mark the opening of the district's first designated nature area - Nosterfield Local Nature Reserve.

Aimed at raising awareness of the need for wildlife conservation, the plan contains a list of action points focused on the species and habitats which are in greatest need of protection and enhancement.

Adopted last year by local councillors, it also provides a reference point for developing future planning policies on the natural environment, making decisions on development proposals and in the prioritisation of grants.

It includes actions to protect bats, lakes and ponds, lowland heathland and farmland, as well as work for towns, villages and open spaces.

The nature reserve, near Bedale, was formally designated in June 2001 and is now owned and managed by the Lower Ure Conservation Trust.

Created on 110 acres of former gravel workings, it is rich in wildlife, including many rare bird species.

Among those taking part in the launch will be local Tory MP Ann McIntosh, Lawrence Jones-Walters of English Nature, and Christopher Bourne-Arton of the Lower Ure Conservation Trust.
