A WOMAN found hanged in her cell at a North-East prison has been named.
Susan Stevens, 48, from the South, was discovered hanging from a home-made ligature by staff at Durham Prison in the early hours of Friday.
She had only been there for three days, having been transferred from London's Holloway Prison, and was serving a life sentence for wounding with intent and arson.
A police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances.
An inquest is due to be opened later this week.
The death comes after it emerged that Durham Prison had the worst record for suicides among jails in England and Wales last year, with six inmates taking their own lives. The revelation has prompted concerns from prison reform campaigners, who blame it on overcrowding.
