A WOMAN has been banned from keeping dogs for seven years after she admitted causing unnecessary suffering to her two pets.
Shelley Atkinson was also ordered to do 12 months community rehabilitation when she appeared at Bishop Auckland Magistrates' Court for sentencing yesterday.
Atkinson, of Almond Court, Shildon, County Durham, narrowly escaped a prison sentence.
The court heard that the black and white terrier-cross and a red coloured lurcher-type dog were found wandering in the town. They were taken to a rescue centre and the RSPCA called.
Both dogs were emaciated and almost half their natural body weight, which they regained within five weeks of being placed with new owners.
Atkinson, who has no previous convictions, sobbed throughout the proceedings.
She was allowed to keep her pet cat, which the court was told was in a healthy condition and well cared for.
