THE council tax rate for the district of Hambleton will be one of the lowest in the country, councillors confirmed yesterday.
Members have agreed to their cabinet's recommendation to set next year's tax almost £120 below the Government target.
At £62 for a Band D property, it means Hambleton is the third lowest of the 238 shire districts in the UK. The rate represents a rise of £6 for a Band D home.
"This endorses our policy to continue setting council tax well below Government-assessed levels," said the council's deputy leader Councillor Arthur Barker.
"Over the last ten years we have levied £730 less per Band D household than the Government assessed. That has created a saving of more than £25 million across the district."
The total tax for an average Band D household in the Hambleton area is expected to be £1,055.32 once precepts from the county council, the police authority and parish council are added to the bill.
