A WHITE stallion which featured in the film Gladiator was preparing for its latest role in the region yesterday.
Andalucian stallion Rodrigo will appear at the Sunderland Empire in the forthcoming operas Carmen and La Boheme.
Rodrigo, which is trained and cared for by Wayne Docksay, of Animal Acting, a supplier of animals for films, television and advertising, came to fame when it starred as Russell Crowe's horse in Gladiator.
It was chosen for the operas from a large number of horses for its intelligence, beauty, and pleasant temperament.
Both operas are being performed by the Chisinau National Opera and the Romale Gypsy Dance Troupe.
The set for Carmen will recreate Seville's main square, using fountains and running water, while that for La Boheme will reflect Bohemian art, with costumes by Alexandr Krivoshein.
Bizet's Carmen will be staged on March 25, 26 and 29, while Puccini's La Boheme will be staged on March 27 and 28.
Tickets are available on 0191-514 2517.
