ARTIST Sue Woolhouse picked up a few ideas for a new art project from Redcar primary schoolchildren this week.

The glass artist was at Dormanstown Primary to work with children on ideas for a new glass screen at the school.

Ms Woolhouse will eventually work on four Government-funded school improvement projects in east Cleveland.

She has received £3,000 from Northern Arts towards the projects, which will augment improvement work at the four schools, costing £1.75m.

Her first commission will be to create a glass screen at the planned new entrance to Dormanstown Primary and she aims to run more workshops at at Newcomen Primary in Redcar, St Peter's CE in Brotton and Bankfields Primary at Eston.

She said: "I have already organised some workshops with the children to get ideas and I am hoping to run all four projects together. They will all have views that reflect the schools and their environments."

The projects are: Dormanstown Primary, £425,000 for a multi-use hall, art design tech area and sensory special needs dorm; Newcomen Primary, Redcar, £377,000 for a performing arts studio, multi-use hall, arts workshop, display area, creche and soft play facility; St Peter's CE, £478,000 for a multi-use hall, community room and kitchen facilities; and Bankfields Primary, £451,000 for an outside multi-use games area, drama performance suite arts and crafts studio, gallery display area and community meeting room.

Ian Jeffrey, Redcar and Cleveland Council's lead member for lifelong learning, said: "These are four fantastic schemes which will bring all manner of benefits to the schools and their communities."
