A FATHER was fighting for his life last night after being beaten up by a gang.
Joiner Mark Toner, 28, was attacked in Wallsend, North Tyneside, as he returned home after a night out.
He suffered serious head injuries and was last night being treated in the neurology department at Newcastle General Hospital.
Mr Toner's family have been told that if he survives, he will be permanently brain damaged.
His wife, Claire, also 28, has appealed to the public to help police catch the attackers. She said their daughter, Laurie, 11, had been struggling to cope since her father was attacked on Friday, February 21.
Police believe Mr Toner was set upon by four people in Ravensworth Close, Wallsend. They urged anyone with information to call them on 0191-214 6555.
* An 18-year-old man has been charged with unlawful wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident. Another man is helping police with their inquiries.
