YOUNG badminton stars from across the North-East are celebrating after successes in two regional tournaments.

Competitors from as far afield as York, Sunderland and Northumberland were among 60 youngsters who took part in the second round of the Darlington Grand Slam and Ferryhill Grand Prix competitions at Darlington's Haughton School and Ferryhill Leisure Centre.

Players accumulate points during four rounds of competition, and the competitor with the highest total will be named the overall winner.

Organisers are hoping to encourage more children to get involved and beginners are welcome to take part in future competitions.

Medals are awarded to the top players at the end of each round and the overall winners will receive certificates and trophies after the final rounds in July.
