A £200,000 grant to encourage businesses in a County Durham borough to employ trainees is firmly under way.
Sean Meighn was announced as the first young person to benefit from support under the Modern Apprenticeship Recruitment Scheme (Mars) in Sedgefield Borough.
Mars encourages businesses located in the Borough to employ young people under a recognised Modern Apprenticeship programme.
The scheme, made possible by the large donation from Sanyo Electric of Japan, offers employers taking on a modern apprentice a grant for each year of the training programme, up to a maximum of £2,000.
The scheme has involved work from both Sedgefield Borough Business Service and the County Durham Development Company.
Mr Meighn embarked on a fabrication modern apprenticeship scheme with Thompson Manufacturing and Engineering, Shildon, and has worked towards an NVQ level three training programme accredited through South West Durham Training.
