FURTHER details emerged yesterday of the death of a man while being held in police custody.

The Police Complaints Authority has launched an investigation into the tragedy in a police cell at Scarborough, at the weekend.

It was revealed yesterday that 33-year-old John McDonnell, from the Ripon area, had been arrested on Saturday night.

Police were called to attend an incident at an address in the Eastfield area of the town at about 11.30pm.

Mr McDonnell was taken to the police station, in Northway, where he was put in a cell. A short time later he was found collapsed in the cell.

A police spokesman said yesterday: "A doctor and paramedics attempted to resuscitate him, but were unable to do so and he was certified dead at 12.40am."

The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to open shortly.
