PEOPLE are being offered free blood pressure checks in a bid to reduce the number of strokes.
People will be able to get their pressure tested at the Safeway supermarket in Durham Road, Birtley, on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, thanks to the Stroke Association and Birtley Rotary Club.
Strokes are the biggest cause of death and disability in England and the main cause of severe disability.
A Rotary club spokesman said: "This devastating condition could be prevented from affecting the great number of people that it does each year if people would only have their blood pressure checked and take appropriate measures to keep levels under control."
