A CHARITY is appealing for volunteers to help cope with the demand for its services.
The Cats Protection League has recently launched a branch in the Wear Valley and Darlington area.
Branch co-ordinator Marion Maychell said: "We urgently need more cat loving people to help with the various tasks involved in running a branch.
"We are particularly eager to meet people who are interested in temporarily fostering cats until permanent homes can be found and would also welcome assistance with vet transportation and publicity."
Services provided at the branch include low-cost neutering vouchers for the pets of people on low incomes, local telephone helplines and a lost and found cat register.
Mrs Maychell said: "There is a real need for more cat rescue and rehoming work in the area. We want to offer as much help to felines in need as we possibly can."
