A LIBRARY was quieter than usual last week because many of the readers were about to fall asleep.
As part of the recent National Bedtime Story Week, Sure Start Leam Lane, in Gateshead, co-hosted a pyjama storytelling party at Leam Lane library for youngsters to share in the pleasure of books at bedtime.
Gateshead Council's educational psychologist, Liz Wright, attended the event, which encouraged parents and carers to enjoy reading to their children last thing at night, explaining how the night-time ritual can aid a child's development, as well as promote a good night's sleep.
She said: "National Bedtime Story Week aimed to highlight the importance of reading to even the youngest children as a way to relax, educate, entertain and also increase the bond between the child and the carer.
"Sharing books and stories can also make a marked improvement in a child's language and learning abilities, and it is really good fun for mum and dad too."
