A GROUP working across the Tees Valley to help disabled people live independently has been awarded £230,000.
The Independent Living Project, in Stockton, won the money from the National Lottery to help it continue its work in the community.
Its Personal Assistance scheme helps people live with disability, while the Handy Person scheme provides minor repairs and maintenance to the home of severely disabled people.
Edith Cartwright, chairwoman of the Independent Living Project, said: "This will make a big difference to the lives of disabled people in the Tees Valley.
"The Handy Person project, in which basic maintenance tasks and small repairs are carried out at the homes of disabled people, benefits not only the users, but will also give employment opportunities to disabled people, who will carry out the work.
"The Personal Assistance scheme will provide training for future carers who will then be placed on a register so that disabled people have a choice of trained carers with skills appropriate to their needs."
The grant is part of £2.3m given to 22 groups in the North-East.
