Dock worker John Barry Durham was today sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail for killing a former friend, following a bitter dispute.

Durham, 33, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of John Paul Robertson, who died last September after being slashed in the neck with a knife on West Auckland Road, Darlington.

The pair, whose friendship had become strained by the on-going feud between rival gangs in the town, met on the morning of September 28.

Mr Robertson opened Durham's car door before viciously attacking him, Teesside Crown Court was told.

But Durham reached into the footwell of the car, grabbing a knife he carried for work and lashing out at Mr Robertson.

The 37-year-old staggered along the road before collapsing. He was pronounced dead at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Durham looked calm as Mr Justice Elias told him he would be jailed for three-and-a-half years and only considered for release after half that time.
