POLICE are to pose as walkers to catch would-be arsonists as hills in a part of the region become tinder dry this summer.

The undercover stakeout is a joint campaign between Cleveland Police, the fire brigade, local councils and farmers, and has been called Operation Rambler.

Sergeant Mike Cane, of Cleveland Police, said: "Throughout the campaign, we will be patrolling in plain clothes, stopping people who are acting suspiciously.

"Our aim is to make the hills a safer environment for everyone. I would advise those intent on starting fires to think again."

Councillors Eric Jackson and Brenda Forster, mayor and mayoress of Redcar and Cleveland, will launch the campaign on Eston Hills, near Middlesbrough, on Friday.

People visiting the hills are being urged to take extra care and be more vigilant to prevent a blaze from starting in the hills during hot weather.

Grangetown fire station manager Tony Churchill said: "We typically deal with about 100 hill fires in this area during the hot weather and we need the help of the local community to help us reduce this number.

"We need to remind people to follow the countryside code and prevent fires by making sure they do not drop burning cigarette ends.

"Anyone tempted to start a deliberate fire should be warned that they will face police action."

He added: "Every fire we attend is paid for by the public. Every call has an effect on our resources and reduces the amount of fire cover available elsewhere.

"Every deliberate fire, as well as having an effect on the environment, wildlife and our heritage, may also put lives at risk."
