PUPILS at a Darlington school went head to head in a chess tournament at the weekend.

More than 60 youngsters at Whinfield Junior school took part in the British Land UK Chess Challenge 2003, which is aimed at promoting the game nationally. Pupils aged between eight and 11-years-old played seven rounds of chess on Saturday in the first stage of the competition involving 1,940 children across the country.

A total of 17 pupils at Whinfield made it through to the regional heat which takes place in Sunderland on Saturday, May 3.

A prize ceremony was held after the tournament to congratulate the winning girl and boy in each year.

The school has run a successful chess club for the past 18 months.
