THOUSANDS of small enterprises across the region have had a weight lifted from their shoulders thanks to a major campaign by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The Inland Revenue has started to pay tax credits to mothers with children or on low incomes direct to the person concerned - rather than asking small businesses to undertake this for them through the payroll.

The announcement of the change has been welcomed by the FSB in Yorkshire and Humber, which has been pivotal in the national campaign pressurising the Inland Revue for several years.

FSB Yorkshire and Humber policy chairman Tony Cherry, who sits on the FSB National Policy Committee, said: "We are delighted that the Inland Revenue has changed its procedures. Expecting small enterprises, with all the pressures they face, to do this on the Revenue's behalf was an administrative burden too far.

"We welcome this on behalf of small businesses across the region and very much hope that the extra administrative capacity that this offers can be used to improve the running of their enterprises and help them to be more competitive."
