The Presidents Cup Final

The final was played between Redcar Workies A and Carlin How A at the Saltburn Conservative Club on Monday, March 24, the match referee was Phil Vaughan. The competition consists of four singles matches followed by two games of doubles. Jason Robinson was first to the table playing Carlin's Brian Magor. The frame was a real see-saw affair with nobody really taking charge, Robinson had a slim lead of 49-40 with the last four colours remaining until he cleared these with a 22 clearance to win 71-40. The Workies were now one frame to the good. Neil Cummins was next to the table playing Mark Earl. Cummins took an early advantage aided by an 18 break. Earl regained control leading 34-32 before the colours but it was Cummins who won the second frame aided by yet another 22 clearance, the final score finished at 59-34. The Workies were now leading 2-0. Andrew Shelley then battled to win a frame back for Carlin after when narrowly beating Darren Mudd 68-54. Tony Zutshi was last to play his singles match against Richard Beckham. Zutshi kicked off brilliantly compiling breaks of 9, 24 and 16 putting him 49-0 ahead. Beckham instantly replied with a 28 but Zutshi stuck to his task playing the snooker of his life to beat Beckham 93-51. The match was now all-square at two frames each and the total aggregate points for both teams were identical at 235 each. The first of the doubles matches saw Jason Robinson and Neil Cummins playing their wits against Brian Magor and Mark Earl. The Workies pair went into an early lead assisted by a 21 break which was compiled by Robinson. The Workies pair held a 57-34 points advantage with only the remaining four colours on the table, that was until Cummins clinically potted these with yet another 22 clearance. The Workies now had a 3-2 frame advantage and were 45 points ahead in the long game. The final doubles match was between Darren Mudd and Richard Beckham who were playing Andrew Shelley and Tony Zutshi. Beckham broke off and must have thought the balls were safe until Shelley swerved the cue ball around the green to pot a red near to the middle pocket, he then proceeded to compile a 24 break off this shot. Shelley and Zutshi now led by 32-1 and must have thought they'd regained control of the match until Beckham was left an opening which resulted in him compiling a brilliant 76 break. The frame was conceded at 77-32 in favour of the Workies who won what can only be described as a very closely contested match 4-2 and are therefore crowned this year's Presidents Trophy Winners.
