Durham and District League: Coxhoe Club went down by the odd point at home to Bowburn Cooperage, who had two wins from JP Clark and Simon Jackson, and one each from Brian Latue, Kenny Atkinson and Mel Lindsay. Crook Individual League

Aaron Cowan produced a very good win in the first week of this new league, played at Crook Coach and Horses, when he beat one of the favourites, Neil Campbell. In the first frame Neil broke off but the cue ball ended on the floor and Aaron cleared the table. The second frame was very tactical with Neil levelling the scores. In the third Aaron was in trouble but went for a spectacular cushion first cut on his last ball and was delighted to see the ball go down and the white finish perfectly on he black. Unfortunately he wobbled his shot but got out of the snooker, which was laid to knock the black in for victory.

The match between Michael Burke and Darren Tinkler saw two shared very tactical frames but then in the decider, Darren broke but came up dry and Michael cleared the table.

Durham Ranking Tournament

Michael Rhodes, winner for the last two years, came through the third event at Durham Snooker Club to take his first victory of the 2003 tournament when he beat Steve Thompson 5-1 in the final. Rhodes took the £100 prize and moved from ninth to third in the rankings, whilst Thompson collected £50 and retained his first place in the rankings.

In the semi-finals Rhodes beat Colin Hutchinson for the loss of only one frame, whilst Thompson whitewashed Kevin Rainbow. The beaten semi-finalists each collected £20, whilst Rainbow had the satisfaction of moving from 20th to seventh in the rankings.

The plate winner was Andy Seal, who received £15 for beating Andrew Morley 3-1. Morley collected £8. In the plate semi-finals, Seal beat Andrew Mole 2-1 and Andrew Morley beat Trevor Walton 2-0.

League leaders, Ferryhill lost their 100 per cent record when they only led after the first frame in their home match with Newton Aycliffe and were then taken to the wire before managing to retain their unbeaten tag by forcing a draw.

Phil Cox gave Ferryhill a good start but Newton Aycliffe stayed ahead until the match reached five each as the home side had wins from Simon Corbridge, Steve Wray, Steve Webster and Gordon Tyreman being matched by two wins from Gary Spooner and one each from Richie Bellwood, Paul Wade and Gordon Brown.

Richie Bellwood beat Steve Webster to put the visitors ahead but Terry Wray levelled by beating Paul Wade. Carl Little restored Aycliffe's lead by beating Steve Wray only to see Simon Corbridge force the draw when he beat the visiting Gordon Brown.

Spennymoor made their first victory of the season when they beat the visiting Bishop Auckland for the loss of only two points. This pushed the Bishops to the foot of the table without a win to their name. The Moors had two points from Dave Bromley, Shaun Archer, Ronnie McAloon, Steve Hunter and Paul Biddle with Dave Elliott and Ron Turner adding one each. The Bishops two points came from Kevin Watson and Peter Mernor.

Willington Brewer's Droop made their first ever win in this league when they edged through to beat the visiting Toft Hill Three Tuns by the odd point. The Brewer's had two singles from Tony Atkinson with Stephen Britton and John Gallagher adding one each. The Tuns went one short of victory with two singles wins from Vince Hunt and Steve Thompson with Steve Hambleton and Graham Cummings adding one each. Billy Wragg and Stephen Britton took the doubles for the home side and then Tony Atkinson clinched victory by winning both captain's games against Vince Hunt.

League leaders, Spennymoor Ash Tree went down for the second week in succession when the visiting Spennymoor Weardale won by the odd point. The Ash Tree had two singles points from Ronnie McAloon and Richard Turner, whilst the visitors went ahead with two points from Shaun Archer, Steve Marshall and Tom Irwin. The Ash Tree took the doubles through Steve Hunter and Ronnie McAloon with Paul Biddle taking the first captain's game against Shaun Archer. However in the deciding captain's game Archer had his revenge and took the Weardale to victory.

Spennymoor Ash Tree remain at the top by two points from Crook Coach and Horses A, who are one point ahead of Tow Law Station.

Crook Royal Sun raced into a 5-2 lead against the visiting Crook Travellers Rest B, who are the reigning runners-up but then had to struggle through the final frame to manage a draw. The Sun had singles points from Ronnie Hope, David Haygarth, Paul Emerson, Simon Bowey and Cliff Johnson to add to the doubles from Haygarth and Hope. However the Travellers recovered from their early deficit to go ahead with one frame left with two points from Neil Campbell and one each from Jim Ainsley. Michael Burke, Jimmy Singlewood and Doug Bowey with Michael Burke and Peter Coates adding the doubles. In the final frame the Sun got the draw when Simon Bowey beat Jim Ainsley.

Croft Social Club visited Crook Spitfire Club with both teams looking for their first victory. However neither managed as they finished all square. The Spitfire had two points from Rob Grayson and Gordon Walker with Dave Sneath, Mark Callaghan and Ronnie Rinaldi adding one each. The visitors' points came from Dave Parvin, Chris Clough, Ian Robson and Keith Hogarth with the two doubles coming from Bernie Robson with Dave Fenwick and Dave Pearson with Ian Robson.

The Olde Horse Shoe are two points ahead of Crook Belle Vue in the First Division, whilst Crook Coach and Horses B are six ahead of the King's head and the Australian in the Second Division.

Bishop Auckland Area League

Henknowle Manor, league runners-up, visited third placed Bishop Auckland Derby in the Knockout Cup with the hosts making the better start with wins for Steven Lowther and Gary Dixon. However, the Manor proved their worth as they took the next six games with Peter Mernor and Steven Webb claiming two apiece, whilst Jon Tomlinson and Ron Wright won one each to leave the team wanting one more point for victory.

The Derby rallied well with Stuart Milne and Andrew Delve winning the final two singles games. Andrew Delve combined well with Michael Richardson to take the first doubles and Gary Dixon with Stuart Milne took the second to level the scores at six-all.

The Derby's Steven Lowther won the toss in the deciding captain's game and elected to break and, although he opened the pack well, he didn't manage to pot a ball. The Manor's Steven Webb stepped up and completed a tricky clearance to claim the game and see the Manor through to the semi finals.

Spennymoor League

Spennymoor Black Horse held on to a share of the top spot with Spennymoor Quinns Inn after they only dropped three points to the visiting Spennymoor Railway A. The Horse had singles wins from Glyn Porter, Keith Turner, Dave Miller and Jamie Oliver with Gary Kivil taking the only singles point for the visitors. The doubles were shared with John McIver and Glyn Porter winning for the Horse and John Durkin and Wayne Hicks replying for the Railway. In the captain's game the Railway's Kevin Malloy beat Dave Miller.

The Horse and Quinns Inn are one point ahead of the Voltigeur, who lead the North Eastern by two points.
