A STALWART of a rural community has stood down from his post as chairman of his village hall association after 44 years of service.
Morris Tallentire's retirement marks the end of an era in the village of Butterknowle, in Teesdale, and tributes have poured in from the community following his retirement.
Mr Tallentire was praised for his work in establishing and helping to raise funds for the refurbishment of the village hall. His wife, Ruby Tallentire, was also applauded as an invaluable member of the association.
A gift was presented to Mr and Mrs Tallentire by the village hall committee and a plaque commemorating Mr Tallentire's work has been placed in the hall.
Mr Tallentire said: "The village hall is for everyone's use and long may it stay that way."
