A PRIMARY school sprang into action to celebrate being awarded a top sporting accolade.
Peases West Primary School in Crook, held a fun day packed with healthy activities in celebration of gaining an Activemark Gold award from Sport England.
The award is the top honour presented to schools in recognition of outstanding commitment to promoting health and fitness.
Headteacher Judith Stirk said: "We make every effort to encourage all pupils to get involved in sport, to live healthier lifestyles.
"Within the curriculum we provide a varied programme of sports to try and find something all children will enjoy.
"Out of school clubs, such as walking, table tennis, cricket and dance, are very well attended and an important part of the sports provision.
"We're thrilled with the award and wanted to celebrate with this Active Day for All even before we have received the certificate." Children and parents enjoyed a walk around Billy Row and Stanley led by Lynn Wilson, project co-ordinator for the Wear Walking for Health initiative which the school helped launch last October.
Children also spent time using their own bikes and skateboards before a round-robin of football, cricket and basketball matches with Wear Valley District Council coaches.
Mrs Offler said: "I knew that we did sport well here but this award rubber-stamps the value we place on PE. Sport teaches the children how to work together, support one another and value each other."
